Join us in the swamp for our kids summer clay classes. Students will have fun while building their creative skills. Projects will use a variety of ceramic techniques, including making texture stamps, working with molds, making coil and pinch pots, using clay slabs, creating different textures, and free form creations.
Students will get to glaze their creations either in class or during our summer Open Studio hours. The kids will have full control over the colors and styles of their pieces, and work with lead-free, food-safe glazes. Their works will be fired in our studio kilns and available for pick-up and a lifetime of use and enjoyment. These are REAL ceramic projects using stoneware clay, and the functional pieces (bowls, cups, etc) will be fully food safe when finished.
This class is for our YOUNGER students, but can be taken by those of any age to get experience with clay. (Students really get what they put into a class, and any project can be "leveled up" by an older or more experienced student.)
Projects include at least:
* Empty bowls - making two soup/cereal bowls, one to keep, and one to donate to one of the local Empty Bowls projects (either Martin or Palm Beach).
* Creature Sponge Holder or Phone Amplifier
* Family Coat of Arms
* Texture Stamps
* Slab texture flower vase
Possible additional projects include: Animal Wind Spinner, Necklace pendants & beads, Hanging plant holder
Cost includes instruction, use of tools, clay, glazes, bisque firing, use of studio for glazing, and final firing.
All of the projects are different from those taught in the Older Kids(except for the Empty Bowls). So, if a student wants to take both classes, then there will be plenty of new things to learn!
Classes will be held either:
Wednesdays, June 6, 13, 20 & 27
Thursdays, June 7, 14, 21 & 28
Drop-off and/or sign in starts at 9:30 am. Class is from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm. If a student is taking both morning and afternoon classes, feel free to bring a bag lunch and picnic in the shade.
Parents/guardians are welcome to hang out during class. There's not a ton of room in our clay classroom (which is air conditioned), but there's plenty of room on the SwampFires farm and we will have an area in the shade with lots of fans! We will also have plenty of water on hand at all times and bathroom facilities available.
We need a minimum of 4 students to sign up for each class, and the total size is limited to 12 kids (with 6 students per adult teacher).
Who are we?
SwampFires clay classes will be taught by Susan and Gwenn Kennedy, sisters and founding artists of the studio. We both started ceramics as students in the Jupiter school system, and Gwenn received here BS in Fine and Constructive arts from FSU. We've been professional potters for over eight years, and have been teaching for nearly as long. If you would like any references, please don't hesitate to ask.
